What Is Counselling?
Counselling can look different for each person depending on what you want to get from the process and the approach the counsellor takes. At its fundamental level counselling is about listening and feeling listened to, it's about a safe person and environment to explore any issues you have without fear of judgement.
What Can I Expect From Counselling?
Counselling sessions usually last 50 minutes and seeing a private counsellor means that the number of sessions are not limited, unless you want them to be. An initial appointment will help us work out what your main concerns are, how long you might need sessions for, how often we will have verbal reviews and so on. Much of this is entirely up to you and dependent on your needs. If sessions need to be longer than 50 minutes for any reason this can be discussed and agreed upon.
Will I Feel Better Straight Away?
Often, when we seek counselling, we aren't in a great place to begin with and simply sharing some of what you are carrying can help quite quickly. Sometimes when we begin to explore issues they can lead to deeper elements of who you are or what you've been through, exploring and beginning to process these elements can make you feel worse before you feel better. While it can be a bumpy road it usually means we are on the right track to the change and growth you're aiming for.
